Stump Removal – How to Get Rid of a Stump in Your Yard

After hiring tree service experts to cut down a large tree or even after trimming a small one on your own, you may be left with a stump in your yard. These unsightly and invasive objects can attract pests, rot in the soil, encourage weed growth and harm any other plants and trees sharing your property. They can also damage the foundation of your home or reduce its value. In addition, they can be a fire hazard and tripping hazard for children and pets.

If you do not want to deal with the hassle of digging up a stump, consider hiring a professional with a stump grinder. This machine grinds the stump into mulch, allowing you to plant right over it or cover it with grass and soil. It’s a faster and more efficient way to get rid of your old stump, but is also more expensive than some other methods.

Other stump removal techniques involve girdling the roots or using fire to smolder them. While this is a good alternative to removing the stump by digging or burning, it requires some patience as the stump will not disappear right away and may take months to a year before the stump and root system are completely killed.

The first step in girdling is to use a chainsaw or shovel to cut a ring around the stump. You must make sure the ring is not too close to the stump as this can damage the roots. Next, dig out the stump and the surrounding area to reveal the roots. You can then cut away the roots with a saw or spade. You should also cut any regrowing sprouts as they can eventually become the new stump.

A more efficient method is to drill holes in the top of the stump and pour in a chemical preparation. This can be as simple as Epsom salt or rock salt, or it could include potassium nitrate. The chemicals soften the stump and encourage it to rot more quickly. The process can be time consuming and the chemicals can be harmful to animals, so it is best to hire a professional if you are using this option.

Lastly, you can burn the stump. Before doing so, check with your local fire department to see if it is safe. Once you have the go ahead, prepare a fire ring and lay logs and kindling on top of the stump to enclose it. Be sure to supervise the fire and keep a hose nearby as a safety precaution.

The easiest and most effective way to remove a tree stump is by grinding it. This is a job that can be done by professional stump grinders, or you can do it yourself by renting a stump grinding machine from most hardware stores. It is important to wear the appropriate safety equipment when working with a stump grinder, including steel-toed boots and a face shield. It is also a good idea to have a pair of work gloves rated for chainsaw resistance and a hard hat.
